IVF TREATMENT
IVF treatment is a modern assisted reproductive method with high success rates that offers hope to many couples who have difficulty conceiving. It provides effective results especially in cases of unexplained infertility or problems related to egg and sperm quality. When planned together with supportive applications such as PRP, the chance of pregnancy can be increased even in patients with diminished ovarian reserve or advanced age.
In the following sections, explanations are provided regarding in which situations IVF treatment is applied, how the process progresses, and frequently asked questions about the treatment. For detailed information about IVF treatment, you may contact Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nicel Taşdemir.
WHAT IS IVF (IN VITRO FERTILIZATION)?
IVF treatment is an assisted reproductive method in which eggs obtained from the woman and sperm taken from the man are fertilized in a laboratory environment. The formation of pregnancy depends on many factors such as the structure of the reproductive organs and the number and quality of reproductive cells. Problems in these areas may make natural conception difficult.
The main purpose of IVF is to control these factors, closely monitor the fertilization process, and increase the chance of pregnancy. The most important difference from natural conception is that fertilization occurs outside the body under controlled conditions. In suitable patients, pregnancy rates with IVF treatment can reach approximately 55–60 percent.
WHEN IS IVF TREATMENT APPLIED? HOW IS INFERTILITY DIAGNOSED?
If pregnancy cannot be achieved within one year despite regular and unprotected sexual intercourse, evaluation for infertility is required. However, in women over the age of 35, this period is accepted as 6 months. This is because egg number and quality decrease with age, making it more difficult to achieve pregnancy.
As a result of examinations and evaluations performed during this process, the presence of infertility and its possible causes are determined in detail. In some couples, no medical cause can be identified. At the end of the evaluation, IVF treatment may be decided by considering the characteristics of both partners.
DIFFERENCES BETWEEN IVF AND INSEMINATION
IVF and insemination are two different assisted reproductive methods used in infertility treatment. The main difference between these treatments is the place where fertilization occurs. In insemination, fertilization takes place inside the uterus, whereas in IVF treatment, fertilization is performed in a laboratory environment.
In insemination treatment, the ovaries are stimulated with medications and a trigger injection is administered. Then, sperm obtained from the man are placed directly into the uterus. In cases of mild male factor infertility, insemination may be preferred before IVF.
In IVF treatment, after the trigger injection, mature eggs are collected and combined with sperm in the laboratory. Fertilization may occur naturally or by applying the intracytoplasmic sperm injection method when necessary.
IN WHICH SITUATIONS IS IVF TREATMENT APPLIED?
IVF treatment may be preferred in the following situations
In cases where pregnancy cannot be achieved despite open fallopian tubes
Presence of intrauterine adhesions
Women with ovulation disorders
Patients diagnosed with endometriosis
Male factor infertility related to sperm count, motility, or morphology
Unexplained infertility cases
Advanced maternal age
UP TO WHAT AGE CAN IVF TREATMENT BE APPLIED?
In women, IVF treatment can generally be applied up to the age of 45. Although success rates decrease with advancing age, it is possible to achieve pregnancy up to this age under appropriate conditions.
In men, there is no strict age limit for IVF treatment. However, after the age of 55, a significant decrease in sperm motility may be observed, which can negatively affect treatment success.
HOW MANY TIMES CAN IVF TREATMENT BE APPLIED?
There is no specific limit to the number of IVF attempts. In many patients, the chance of success increases as the number of attempts increases. However, in cases of repeated failure, additional evaluations may be required to investigate underlying causes.
If the reason for failure is the inability to obtain eggs or poor egg quality, supportive methods such as PRP may be utilized.
IVF TREATMENT COSTS
IVF treatment offers an important option today for many couples who wish to have children. However, for proper planning of the treatment process, the reproductive system must be evaluated in detail.
If intrauterine adhesions, fibroids, or other gynecological problems that may negatively affect the treatment process are present, these issues may need to be treated first. Such conditions can directly affect the treatment plan and cost.
Therefore, IVF treatment costs are not standard and are determined individually for each patient.
